Celebrating autumn harvest in New Zealand

2 min read

Autumn in New Zealand means crisp air, colourful pumpkin and beetroot, and a shift to heartier, home-cooked meals — including a smoky taste of Mexico.

Autumn in New Zealand is a special time of year. The leaves change colour, and there's a crispness in the air that's perfect for cosying up with good food. It's when we say goodbye to the light salads of summer and hello to the comforting warmth of autumn meals. Let's explore what makes this season so delightful for food lovers.

Pumpkins and kumara start to take centre stage. We love pairing pumpkin's mild sweetness and earthy flavour profile with savoury, robust herbs like sage or rosemary, particularly when combined with our creamy sauces!

Beetroot and apples flourish this season, bringing their own splash of colour and flavour to the table. Beetroot can be roasted to bring out its sweetness or added raw for a crunchy texture in salads. Apples, on the other hand, add a nice crunch and a hint of sweetness to both sweet and savoury dishes.

This autumn, we're spicing things up with a taste of Mexico. Autumn is a great time of year for Mexican cuisine because late summer produce is still in abundance, such as corn and tomatoes, and we start looking towards heartier meals with the chill coming. Think chipotle prawn tacos that add a smoky kick to your dinner or a hearty black bean and corn salad with fresh herbs that's just right for the season.

The oven gets utilised more this season. Roasting caramelises and enhances the flavours of pumpkin and root vegetables. Don't be afraid of the crispy bits!

This is the season to enjoy the rich, caramelized flavours that come from a bit of roasting or baking.

And while we're enjoying all these wonderful flavours and textures, here's a handy tip: Keep your apples away from other produce. They release a gas that can make other fruits and veggies ripen too quickly.

In New Zealand, autumn food is all about the freshness of the harvest and the warmth of home-cooked meals. It's a time to enjoy the best of both worlds – the last hints of summer produce like tomatoes and corn, alongside the hearty, comforting flavours of autumn. So, as the days get shorter and the air gets chillier, let's embrace the season. Autumn is a beautiful reminder of the simple joys of cooking and eating, of experimenting with flavours, and of gathering around the table to share meals with loved ones.
